Mercedes-Benz dealers are probably making space on their showroom floors for the imminent arrival of another newcomer, the CLA. This is the booted version of the A-Class, of which you will have read about elsewhere on this site and in CAR magazine.
With the new range’s introduction scheduled for October we have just obtained prices for the newcomer. There will be four models available initially (three petrol and one diesel), priced as follows:
CLA180 R349 729
CLA200 R373 829
CLA220 CDi R397 600
CLA45 AMG R678 607
The CLA is essentially an A-Class with a boot, but the pricing brings it closer to the current C-Class (a model that is due for replacement next year). Only one C-Class is easier on your bank balance than the CLA models. Compared with the hatchback variant the price divide lower down the range is much wider. The CLA180 is nearly R34 000 more expensive than the A180.
You can read a full road test of the CLA200 in the November issue of CAR.
