The current trend in the motoring world is to build smaller engines married to turbocharger(s), but in Porsche’s case, it will be building a smaller car dubbed the 718.
According to Germany¹s Autobild, the new 718, which is based on the current Boxster/Cayman platform, will be smaller and lighter than the current Boxster when it hits showrooms in 2016. It will, reportedly, be more “uncompromising and agile”, with a stripped-down interior and unique styling.
Porsche aims to market the 718 as a purist’s sportscar, with high-strength steel and aluminium helping to reach a target weight of approximately 1 200 kg. To keep the weight as low as possible, the 718 will be equipped with a manual gearbox and a soft top with a plastic rear window.
Keeping in line with the trends as mentioned above, the 718 will source its power from 2,0- and 2,5-litre boxer petrol engines. The former is expected to produce 211 kW and 400 N.m. of torque, while the 2,5-litre is set to produce 266 kW and 470 N.m.
The arrival of the 718 means that the Boxster and Cayman will be more upmarket when both vehicles are set for refreshment in 2016.
