By now it’s no secret that the all-new Ford Mustang will be coming to South Africa. For the very first time in the nameplate’s history the Pony cars will be built in RHD, which means local Ford fans will be able to buy one straight from a showroom floor… Sadly, that will only take place at the end of 2015 as that is when production of the rightys will take place. To whet our appetites Ford South Africa has just release some tech info, namely regarding engine specification.
Two engines will be on offer to local buyers: a new 2,3-litre EcoBoost engine will dish up 228 kW and 440 N.m of torque, making it the first ever Mustang to feature a turbocharged, inline four pot motor. In a more traditional vein a 5,0-litre V8 will also be offered. This engine develops 320 kW and 536 N.m of torque.
“The EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output Mustang drivers expect, regardless of the car’s speed,” said Scott Makowski, EcoBoost powertrain engineering manager. “It delivers where a Mustang driver expects it to – with a broad, flat torque curve and great drivability under any conditions.”
In another first for the model the all-new Mustang will also feature a fully independent rear suspension, with aluminium components such as the suspension knuckles, rear axle housing on automatic transmission cars, rear control arms, and rear brake callipers, all in an effort to reduce unsprung mass.
