The first details of the new 2015 BMW 7-Series have surfaced overseas. As expected, Münich’s new super-luxury sedan will feature a host of new technologies and will be offered in two body styles.
All this is desperately needed as the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has wiped the floor with the current competition.
Over the years we got used to BMW’s codenames starting with an E or an F, but now the company has added a new letter to signal the new 7-Series. Called the G11 and G12, these two names will represent the standard wheelbase and the LWB model respectively.
The interior is said to be a significant update compared to the current 6-Series, while every aspect of the available technology will receive an update. Well known motoring journalist Georg Kacher even reported that BMW is “about to hire Stefan Sielaff from the Audi/VW Group as their new head of interior design”. It clearly shows that the Audi/VW Group is seen as one of the manufacturers with the best interiors in the industry.
As has become the norm with new cars featuring a new platform, this ‘35up’ platform of the new 7-Series can be adapted to different sizes. The result is that compared to the outgoing model, the new models will be up to 100 kg lighter than the current generation.
Downsizing, as can be expected, will also play a big part in the new 7-Series. There are talks of a 725i which will be powered by a four-cylinder, 203 kW engine.
Next in line will be the latest 3,0-litre, inline six-cylinder engine, a recipe that we have became accustomed to over the past several years. Power and torque will be up by ten per cent, while there will also be a reduction fuel consumption. An updated version of the V8 will also be offered and the hybrid model will now feature a plug-in application.
Expect the new 7-Series to debut early next year.
