Audi will unveil its third-generation S3 at the upcoming Paris Motor Show and the newcomer’s appreciable power hike looks like a gauntlet being tossed the way of BMW’s M135i and the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG.
At the heart of the new S3 sits a version of Audi’s EA888 2,0-litre direct-injection turbopetrol engine developing 220 kW and 380 N.m of torque – a considerable boost over that of the outgoing car’s 188 kW and 350 N.m. This unit can be mated with a six-speed manual and S-tronic dual-clutch transmissions. The manual will crack the 0-100 km/h run in 5,4 seconds with the ‘auto completing the same task in 5,1 seconds. Both cars are electronically limited to 250 km/h. Drive is channeled to all four wheels via a Haldex-style multiplate clutch.
Stylistically, the S3’s bodywork takes in sharper lines (including the signature tornado line on the flanks), while other key design features include the single-frame grille with a chrome frame and matte grey insert with chromed louvres, more prominent side sills, a rear diffuser with twin exhaust ports and a roof-mounted rear spoiler.
The standard headlamps are xenon plus units with LED daytime running lights while full LED headlamps will be offered as an optional extra. Along with S badges adorning the rear and grille, this model will be offered in a choice of 14 colors, including exclusive crystal-effect finished hues dubbed Panther Black and Estoril Blue.
The cabin sports a clean facia treatment reminiscent of that of the A1, with pod-like dials. Matte aluminum inlays, grey dials with white needles (including a boost guage), an optional flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel and sports seats are among the interior highlights and luggage space stands at 365/1 100 dm3.
The new Audi S3 will find its way onto the local market during the first quarter of 2013.
