Audi has announced the arrival of a new range-topping R8 LMX supercar, which not only boasts more power than an “ordinary” model, but also makes use of laser technology for its headlamp units, borrowed from the company’s storied Le Mans programme.
The R8 LMX’s high beams make use of a laser lighting system, which at 5 500 Kelvin, offer twice the illumination of an LED headlamp system. Activated from 60 km/h, the system employs a module to generate a blue laser beam that is made roadworthy by a phosphor converter. The system also employs sensors that use a camera to adjust the lights for an oncoming vehicle.
Apart from the high-tech lighting, the R8 LMX can be distinguished by its Ara Blue exterior hue, gloss black exhaust tailpipes model-specific 19-inch alloys and numerous carbon fibre-reinforced polymer elements, such as the front splitter and fixed rear wing. Inside, the LMX also gets leather upholstery with blue stitching, Alcantara rooflining and illuminated scuff plates.
The R8 LMX is powered by the company’s 5,2-litre normally aspirated V10 engine that now produces 419 kW and 540 N.m of torque. All four corners are driven through a seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic transmission and quattro all wheel drive system. Audi claims a zero to 100 km/h sprint of 3,4 seconds and top speed of 320 km/h.
The R8 LMX is expected to make its international debut at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, and production will be limited to just 99 units.
