Over the past 33 years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has established itself in the pantheon of high-end SUVs by transforming from its traditional Spartan roots to an on-road executive express, while staying true to its simple exterior design and off-road prowess. The German manufacturer has once again made a few adjustments to keep the G-Class fresh.
The most notable inclusions on the exterior are new LED daytime running lights and new mirrors. The range-topping G63 AMG also features a new grille, red brake calipers and 20-inch wheels. Inside, the instrument cluster and centre console have been redesigned. The former now features an integrated TFT colour screen between the speedometer and tachometer that forms part of the Comand Online infotainment system; which also includes internet access, satellite navigation, Linguatronic voice-control and Bluetooth connectivity.
The G-Class line-up includes three engine variants in five-door long-wheelbase configuration; the G350 BlueTEC, G500 and G63 AMG. The base spec G350’s turbodiesel V6 engine produces 155 kW at 3 400 r/min and 540 N.m of torque from 1 600 r/min. The G500’s 5,5-litre V8 produces 285 kW and 530 N.m, while the same sized biturbo V8 in the G63 AMG produces 400 kW and 760 N.m of torque.
Standard equipment includes safety features such as Blind Spot Assist and the Parktronic park-assist system, while the options list is graced with the likes of a reversing camera and Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control.
“Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 33 years and in its latest evolutionary stage, offers state-of-the-art, powerful engines, and further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features. With its now legendary off-road capabilities, the design of the G-Class remains true to its routes and unmistakable styling,” says Selvin Govender, Divisional Manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.
