As a result of strong demand for compact four-door saloons in emerging markets such as Russia and Turkey, Opel recently added another string to its Astra bow, a stylish saloon version. And although an Astra saloon has not been offered in South Africa for more than an entire model cycle, we have been informed that this new model is under consideration for SA market introduction. Opel fans… hold thumbs.
The new variant is claimed to have a boot that measures 460 litres, 90 more than the hatchback. By folding the 60:40 split rear seat its maximum utility space grows to 1 010 litres. In Europe it will be offered with a range of four petrol engines (74 – 132 kW) and three turbodiesel (70 – 96 kW) variants.
Among the offered features are Opel's Advanced Forward Lighting (AFL+) system with with bi-xenon headlamps and a number of sophisticated lighting functions, including variable light distribution, curve light, cornering light and high-beam assist. Also available is the marque's FlexRide system that offers the driver three suspension settings (Standard, Tour and Sport) to choose from.
If the Astra saloon does get the go-ahead for South Africa, we expect to see it in the first half of 2013.
