Porsche has lifted the wraps off the extensively revised 2012 Boxster. Along with a significant re-style, the new Boxster also utilises more lightweight materials and features powerplants optimised for both performance and efficiency.
Aesthetically, the new car features shorter overhangs, a windscreen that has been moved noticeably forward in the car’s flatter profile and more angular character lines reminiscent of the now-defunct Carrera GT supercar. The underpinnings have also undergone extensive changes, providing a longer wheelbase and wider tracks than the outgoing model.
The Carrera GT influences continue in the cabin, with a raked centre console forming part of a more spacious cabin enclosed by a revised electric soft-top that dispenses with a convertible top compartment lid.
The initial model line-up comprises the Boxster and Boxster S, both of which are powered by flat-six engines featuring direct fuel injection. In the case of the Boxster, a 2,7-litre unit based on the 3,4-litre Boxster S engine develops 197 kW – around 11 kW more than its larger predecessor. The Boxster S retains its 3,4-litre engine, but the power output climbs from 228 kW to 235 kW. Both models can be specified with a choice of PDK transmission or 7-speed manual gearbox.
In PDK guises, the Boxster and Boxster S record 0-100 km/h sprint times of 5,7 and 5,0 seconds, respectively. The addition of an electrical energy recuperation system, start/stop and improved thermal management enble the PDK-equipped Boxster to realise an average fuel consumption figure of 7,7L/100 km, while the PDK Boxster S returns 8,0L/100 km.
Both models are also offered with a Sport Chrono Package, featuring dynamic transmission mounts for the first time. Other new offerings is include Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock and a new electro-mechanical power steering system.
The new Porsche Boxster and Boxster S are available for order as of today with first deliveries commencing in June of this year. Pricing for the South African market has not yet been confirmed.
