With double-cab motoring in the South African market as popular as ever, GWM has launched its latest range of pick-ups with an aim of offering an increasingly cash-conscious buyer a more than competent alternative to the often-pricey segment leaders.
The slightly quirky looks of the Steed 3 have been smoothed out on the Steed 5’s front-end as the new GWM double-cab range looks to gain broader appeal in the market, while from the A-pillar back this Chinese brand continues to mimic the shape of the ever-popular Isuzu KB double-cab range.
The single-cab Steed 3 range is set to continue alongside the new 5.
Keen to offer increased value throughout the Steed 5 lineup, both models offer air-conditioning, central locking, electric windows, a multi-function steering wheel and comprehensive audio system, while 16-inch alloy wheels are also standard fitment.
The Steed 5 has been launched with a choice of two engine options. A new 2,5-litre TCI diesel unit offers 80 kW with 300 N.m of torque, while the 100 kW/200 N.m 2,4-litre petrol option is retained from the outgoing range. Both are mated with a five-speed manual transmission and buyers are offered a choice of either 4X2 or 4X4 drivetrain.
ABS braking, dual airbags and front foglamps are standard fitment on all Steed 5 models.
Included in the asking price is a three-year/100 000 km warranty and two-year 24-hour roadside assistance.
