South Africans got their first look at the new Yaris at Toyota’s Johannesburg International Motor Show stand early in October. Just over a month later Toyota South Africa Motors is ready to launch this vehicle onto the market.
The initial range includes a three-cylinder 1,0-litre VVT-i petrol engine that develops 51 kW and 93 N.m. Claimed fuel consumption is 4,8 litres/100 km on the combined cycle, while the CO2 emissions sit at 110 g/km. Also available in the Yaris is the 1,3-litre VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine that offers 73 kW and 125 N.m. Fuel consumption is 5,2 litres/100 km. This unit emits 119 g/km of CO2. These engines are mated with either a five-speed manual (1,0-litre), a six-speed manual (1,3-litre) or a CVT (1,3 XS) transmission.
The Yaris comes in three- and five-door configurations with three specification levels – Xi, XS and XR. With prices ranging between R124 000 and R163 000, the Yaris Xi comes equipped with an MP3-compatible audio system with a USB input, steering wheel-mounted controls and remote central locking. The XS range adds 15-inch alloys, colour coded mirrors and door handles, electric windows at the front and manual air-conditioner. Prices for a Yaris specced to this level start at R141 000 and ends at R189 000. The high-sped XR model gets a touch screen audio system with Bluetooth functionality, climate control and a leather-clad steering wheel and gear knob. Expect to pay between R151 100 and R203 700 for this model.
