Since the local introduction of the new Opel Astra, performance fans have eagerly awaited the arrival of the new Astra OPC (Opel Performance Centre).
With the recent introduction of the Volkswagen Golf R and Scirocco R, the arrival of the OPC couldn’t have been better timed. Also, since the Focus RS was only available in limited numbers, it seems the Scirocco will be the most likely direct opposition for the OPC until the next-generation Ford Focus RS arrives.
Whereas as the previous generation Astra OPC developed 177 kW at 5 600 r/min and 320 N.m at 2 400 r/min, the new model shows a significant improvement. The 2,0-litre direct injection turbopetrol now develops 206 kW and 400 N.m, enough to propel this hot hatch to a claimed top speed of 250 km/h. Expect the acceleration run from standstill to 100 km/h to drop by a couple of tenths of a second.
As is the case with other OPC derivatives, the Astra OPC has been fine tuned on the daunting Nordschleife part of the Nürburgring. The HiPerStrut front suspension, which can also be found on the Astra GTC, will also help to transfer the power and torque to the road in the OPC.
As can be expected, the OPC looks the part and compares favourably to its direct rivals. The front bumper features a much more aggressive design with a more pronounced mesh grille. The side sills gives the OPC a lowered stance while the rear sports a roof spoiler, double exhaust pipes and an air diffuser sited between the pipes.
Expect the OPC to arrive mid to late 2012 in South Africa.
