Vauxhall (badged as Opel in South Africa) has released first details about its new compact SUV, the Mokka.
In the ever-enlarging SUV market, especially among compact SUVs, the Mokka is offered with both part-time all-wheel drive as well as a front-wheel drive. These systems will be connected to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Two petrol engines and a single diesel engine will power the Mokka. To help lower fuel consumption, this SUV will make use of stop/start technology.
Petrol engines include a 1,6-litre naturally aspirated unit that produces 85 kW, while the 1,4-litre turbo unit delivers 103 kW and 200 N.m. The 1,7-litre CDTi turbodiesel kicks out 96 kW and 300 N.m.
Vauxhall's chairman and managing director, Duncan Aldred, had the following to say regarding the Mokka’s design: “The Mokka takes its design cues from larger SUVs and integrates them into a compact, yet modern form.” At a length of 4,28 metres, Vauxhall claims the car will still be able to accommodate five adults in “comfort”. Fold the rear seats down, and the Mokka will be able to swallow up to 1 372 dm3.
Driver and safety systems include electronic stability control (ESC), traction control (TC), hill-start assist (HAS) and even hill-descent control (HDC).
Furthermore, the Mokka will also have lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert.
The Mokka will be shown for the first time at this year's Geneva Motor Show taking place between 8 and 12 March. A spokesperson for General Motors in South Africa confirmed that they will definitely consider the Mokka for local introduction.
