In recent months the rumour mill has suggested that we could have a new four-cylinder Porsche Boxster and Cayman on the horizon. Although that is more than just a rumour, these two new, entry-level models have surfaced on Porsche’s Belgium website.
The cars still use the 2,7-litre, flat-six engine, but power is down from 195 kW to a Golf 6-rivalling 155 kW. Maximum torque is still 280 N.m, although the rev range for the torque delivery is slightly narrower at 4 500 r/min to 5 300 r/min. The sprint to 100 km/h is done in 6,3 seconds for the PDK-equipped model (6,1 with Sport Plus) while the 195 kW version do the same sprint in 5,7 seconds, and 5,5 seconds, respectively. Top speed drops from a claimed 262 km/h to 243 km/h.
It is a similar case with the Cayman. Power is down from 202 kW at 7 400 r/min to 155 kW at the same engine speed. Torque is unchanged at 290 N.m between 4 500 and 6 500 r/min. Top speed drops from 264 to 244 km/h, while the sprint to 100 km/h increases from 5,6 seconds to 6,2 seconds. These times are quoted for the PDK-equipped model without the Sport Plus option.
There is a chance that these models are only specific to Belgium owing to import taxation. However, there hasn’t been any official word from Porsche’s HQ regarding these new entry-level models. With the recent launch of the new Mazda MX-5, it would be a clever move by Porsche to offer a more affordable Boxster and Cayman models though.
