It is nothing new that, as successive model ranges become bigger and heavier, manufacturers tend to introduce smaller derivatives to slot in below them.
This is partly why Porsche’s CEO, Matthias Müller, has confirmed that this Stuttgart-based company will be building a modern version of one of the company’s most iconic cars, the 550 Spyder.
The 550 Spyder was built only a couple of years after the very first Porsche saw the light. It was best known for giving Porsche its first major overall win during that year’s Targa Florio racing event.
However, if you expect to see a retro, lightweight model to celebrate the original 550 Spyder, you might be a little disappointed. The car should be based on a shared platform that could also be used by Audi for upcoming performance models. Obviously, Porsche’s engineers will be developing a model range that should be unique to the company.
In terms of price and weight, this entry-level model will slot in below that of the Boxster. Performance will not necessarily be below that of the Boxster, though. CAR reported earlier this year that Porsche is working on a flat-four engine, and it will be this engine that will power this new roadster. As previously reported, the flat-four engine will also find its way into that of the new Boxster, Cayman and possibly the new 911.
Fortunately this flat-four, said to be around 2,5-litre in size, will be able to develop around 268 kW in turbocharged form.
