[Porsche News] By now it is no secret that Porsche is returning to the World Endurance Championship and, by definition, will contest the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. The German firm is, of course, no stranger to the track at La Sarthe, currently holding the record for the greatest number of outright wins at the famous French race. More official images of Porsche’s Le Mans car have been released by the company this week.
With sister brand Audi having dominated proceedings over the last decade or so, claiming 12 overall wins along the way, it is the first time that Porsche’s record of 16 victories seems in real danger of being broken.
The last time Porsche won at Le Mans was in 1998 with the GT1. This new car will be a bespoke LMP1-class contender, and though no technical details have yet been released there is a good chance that there will be some form of hybrid powertrain under the carbon bodywork.
Other big news for the team is that it has also secured the services of current Formula One pilot, Mark Webber (no stranger to Le Mans as he raced there for Mercedes in 1999 when he famously flipped a Mercedes into the forest), to lead the driving duties. The queue of drivers hoping to drive for Porsche next year must be a long a distinguished one.
