Radar parking sensors

Conventional parking sensors are useful in warning the driver of fixed objects, but they cannot prevent another moving object colliding from the side when reversing out of a parking space. Continental has addressed this problem with its rear-sited cross-traffic-alert (RCTA) system. By using the same technology as blind-spot-detection sensors, it is possible to provide additional warning while keeping costs down. The system consists of two short-range-radar sensors (or eyes) that are hidden behind the rear bumper. Each has a 120-degree view angle and can even detect vehicles that will pass behind the reversing car. By calculating the distance and speed of the approaching object, the driver will be warned in time to prevent a possible collision. The system can even illuminate warning lights in the rear-view mirror, sound a warning to the driver or brake the vehicle if necessary. Expect this technology to reach the automotive market in 2013.
