The Range Rover SUV cannot be accused of being a small vehicle by anyone. However, despite its large external dimensions, the interior space isn’t as voluminous as one might expect, particularly for rear occupants. Parent company Land Rover must have been aware of this fact as the firm has just unveiled a Range Rover LWB (long wheelbase) version of its range-topper.
The wheelbase has been lengthened by 200 mm, with an additional 140mm of rear legroom. Select the individual executive seating package, and the rear seats recline by up to 17 degrees – nine degrees more than before – while an extra 315 dm3 of boot space has been added, taking the maximum to 2 345.
It seems as though the LWB version was always on the cards as the design of the new model isn’t ungainly, maintaining the same sense of proportion of the SWB versions.
There’s a downside to the extra space, though: the LWB car is a claimed 80 kg heavier than the standard Range Rove. The LWB model is still powered by the same supercharged 5,0-litre V8.
Rear passengers are treated to 10,2-inch entertainment screens, electrically deployable tables and a luxury centre console. Extended LED mood lighting, extra leather and four unique colour schemes complete the opulent makeover.
Official word from Land Rover SA is that the Range Rover LWB and an uber-luxurious Autobiography version will be launched here late in 2014. Better start saving.
