Mercedes-Benz has released range details and local pricing of its new S-Class, which is available from February 2014.
The range kicks off with the S350 BlueTec. It develops 190 kW and 620 N.m of torque and will cost R1 214 000. It goes head-to-head (though admittedly not on price) with the BMW 730d (R1 061 873) and Audi A8 3,0 TDI (R1 018 000)
Next in line are two versions of the 225+20 kW/370 N.m S400 Hybrid (which indirectly replaces the S350 V6 petrol). The SWB model will cost R1 227 100 and the LWB version R1 248 200. BMW’s ActiveHybrid7 costs R1 072 399.
Capping the mainstream section of the new range is the 335 kW/700 N.m S500 in SWB (R1 564 100) and LWB (R1 766 100) versions. Its main competitors are the BMW 750i/750Li at R1 332 105/R1 450 605 and Audi S8 (R1 306 500)
The current flagship is the 430 kW/900 N.m S63 AMG (read our impressions from the recent international launch here) at R2 174 000.
We expect the S600L and S65 AMG to follow shortly, as well as other hybrid versions.
