The popular budget hatchback segment of the South African new vehicle market has been bolstered by the arrival of the Suzuki Celerio. The all-new model serves as a replacement for one of its popular hatches, the Alto.
Built in India, as is the case with many of its rivals, the Celerio is a diminutive hatchback that isn’t shy on interior space or standard specification. A slightly tall 1,53-metre height is responsible for the feeling of spaciousness inside the cabin.
Mod-cons
Dual front airbags, ABS, a trip computer, 12V auxiliary power socket and immobiliser are standard throughout the range. The up-spec GL model also features a four-speaker audio system with MP3 compatibility and Bluetooth connectivity, remote audio controls on the steering wheel, electrically operated windows all round as well as an immobiliser/alarm system.
Three in a line
All Celerio models are powered by the same inline three-cylinder engine. The 1,0-litre unit develops 50 kW at 6 000 r/min, with a torque peak of 90 N.m at a relatively low 3 500. Suzuki quotes an impressive claimed combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 4,6 litres/100 km for certain Celerio models, which provides a tank range of over 750 km from just 35 litres.
An easy option
The Celerio is the first Suzuki model to be fitted with the brand’s new automated manual gearbox, which utilises an electro-hydraulic actuator to change gears without the need for a clutch pedal. The system offers both full automatic and manual-shift modes.
Tested
CAR obtained a test unit ahead of the new model’s launch; for a full road test of the newcomer, plus news of several other new hatchbacks that are heading for the local market, buy CAR’s February issue – it’s on sale now.
