It seems a few updated for the BMW 3 Series are around the corner. Said to be shown to journalists during the first week of May, the range will receive minor exterior updates, as well as two new engine derivatives.
According to sources, the range will benefit from new, adaptive LED headlights, tweaked bumpers and an updated kidney grille. Under the hood, the smallest engine currently offered in the range is a 1,6-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit. This engine develops 100 kW and 220 N.m.
Rumours suggest that the 1,5-litre, three-cylinder engine, as we have experienced in the Mini Cooper hatch, could find its way into the 3 Series. If you frown at the idea of a three-cylinder 3 Series, the engine actually also develops 100 kW, but 230 N.m.
This means that should this engine finds its way into the 3 Series, the performance figures, both the 0-100 km/h acceleration time and fuel consumption, will improve over the 1,6-litre version.
Up to now the ActiveHybrid3 (watch our long-term video report of the car here) has been the second most-power offering in the range, slotting in just below the M3/M4. However, it seems BMW will also show its latest 3 Series hybrid in the form of a plug-in-hybrid, equipped with a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor with a lithium-ion battery. Expect this model to be significantly cheaper than the ActiveHybrid3.
