A report has emerged suggesting that Volkswagen is readying a mini SUV based on the Polo as part of a portfolio-broadening new SUV plan.
Having nixed the idea of a Bulli Concept-based reincarnation of the Kombi and placed the BlueSport roadster on ice, a report from Autocar now hints that Volkswagen is aiming to bolster its new model offering by introducing a raft of SUV models within the next couple of years.
The firm’s latest idea is to develop a min- SUV model based on the Polo. Underpinned by the company’s versatile MQB modular platform, the mini SUV will be offered with a choice of FWD and 4×4 drivetrains.
Styling cues are likely to be lifted from the VW TDI Cross Coupe concept that featured in last year’s Tokyo Motor Show and, according to VW’s R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg, will be adapted to the numerous markets at which it will be aimed. This means a basic model for emerging markets and more luxurious versions for Western consumption. The new car will give VW a riposte to such models as the Mini Countryman and Nissan Juke in 2014 should it get the go-head.
Volkswagen is also reportedly in the process of developing an SUV version of the Up! city car for the Sao Paulo Motor Show and a Passat-based SUV for Detroit early next year.
