Next month we will see the unveiling of the 8th generation Volkswagen Passat.
The new Passat will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s very capable MQB platform. However, as expected, it will feature a longer wheelbase and wider tracks compared to the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 models, which use the same platform.
This teaser image – as expected – doesn’t reveal any of the possible surprises that might be in store. One can only make out the LED daytime running lights and even what could be LED headlights.
The wheelarches are more prominent than ever before, while the shoulder line seems to be a strong feature running towards the rear of the car. According to rumours, the European specification car will be slightly smaller than its predecessor. The use of aluminium and high-strength steel means the car will also weigh by up to 85 kg less than the previous Passat.
One of the engines that has been confirmed for the new range is a 2,0-litre, twin-turbodiesel engine. This unit will develop 176 kW and 500 N.m. Connected to a seven-speed DSG transmission it should return around 5,0 litres per 100 km on a claimed combined cycle.
Another model to be offered will be a plug-in hybrid. This model might use a combination of a 1,4-litre TSI engine connected to an electric motor. The total output of this system could be 150 kW, while the electric-only range might be 50 km. A rumoured total range could be up to 1 000 km.
Finally, for performance enthusiasts, there might be the option of a Passat equipped with the Golf R’s 2,0-litre engine. This possible top-of-the range model will offer 206 kW and 380 N.m. It will also be connected to a DSG transmission and Volkswagen’s 4Motion, all-wheel-drive system.
Check back soon for all the details when the new Passat is revealed next month.
