Images and details surrounding a retro sports-flavoured version of the Volkswagen Scirocco, dubbed the Scirocco GTS, have emerged ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Auto Mobil International show in Leipzig, Germany.
Among the exterior highlights on the GTS are prominent black dual roof stripes with red borders, red accenting for the wing mirrors and brake callipers, a smattering of GTS badges, flared side skirts and a rear diffuser. The 18-inch “Thunder” alloy wheels are suspended on a lowered and stiffened sports suspension set-up.
The interior features a number of sporty touches, including a golf ball-style shifter (a nod to the Sciroccos of old), red stitching and GTS logos on the front seats.
The Scirocco GTS is mechanically identical to the 2,0 TSI model currently on sale worldwide. Its 2,0-litre turbopetrol engine develops 155 kW and 280 N.m of torque, which is channelled to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox and an electronic differential lock. Therefore performance should be on par with the standard 2,0 TSI’s 0-100 km/h time of 6,9 seconds and top speed of 240 km/h. We're guessing that it will either be a limted-run model, or possibly an option for those who can't quite strech to the price of a Scirocco R but would like something more distinctive than the stock-standard 2,0 TSI.
The GTS will make its official debut at the Auto Mobil International show (AMI) in Leipzig, Germany on June 2nd. The first examples will find their way into European showroom shortly thereafter. There is currently no indication that the Scirocco GTS will come to South Africa.
