From October 2011, the BMW X3 range will see the introduction of a new entry-level petrol offering in the shape of the xDrive20i.
This model’s newly-developed all-aluminium 2,0-litre four-cylinder unit employs BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology, direct petrol injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft control and Valvetronic variable valve control to develop 135 kW at 4 800 r/min and 270 N.m from 1 900 r/min. The engine also features BMW’s suite of EfficientDynamics technologies, including auto start/stop to help reduce fuel consumption in town driving conditions.
In foreign markets this unit will be joined by an enhanced version of the existing 3,0-litre turbodiesel. Dubbed the xDrive35d, this unit develops 230 kW and 630 N.m of torque between 1 500 and 2 500 r/min. BMW SA currently does not have any plans to introduce this model locally, so the xDrive30d, with its 190 kW and 530 N.m of torque will remain the diesel flagship on our market.
The new models will also usher in a number of specification enhancements, including an automatic release system for the hill hold function, an extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive mobility services and the option of high gloss black trim inserts for the instrument panel.
More details surrounding specifications and pricing for the xDrive20i will emerge closer to the vehicle’s official launch later this year.
