Whether we like it or not, autonomous cars are here to stay and very soon they will be doing most, if not all, of the work behind the wheel. Porsche is now intent on taking this one step further by developing a track mode that makes your car drive as if it is being piloted by Mark Webber.
The idea behind this is to have a professional racing driver “built in” to the autonomous system to act as a mentor whenever you take your Porsche to a track day.
Basically, you get behind the wheel, take notes as the Mark Webber mode pilots the car around and then put into practice what you’ve learnt.
Porsche CEO, Oliver Blume, believes that this will be the best way for drivers to get to know their local tracks, from the braking points to the racing lines. He also said that it will be able to push drivers even further as they attempt to close the gap on the lap time set by the autonomous Webber.
Porsche plans on rolling this system out with its autonomous driving programme set to launch in 2020. Hot on its heels is Nissan, which looks set to add a similar autonomous track package to the next-generation GT-R.
