A fresh report out of Germany suggests that the next-generation BMW 2 Series coupé will remain rear-wheel drive, although it furthermore claims that the 2 Series Convertible will be killed off.
The upcoming third-generation 1 Series, of course, is set to switch to the Munich-based brand’s front-wheel-drive UKL platform already underpinning the likes of the X1 and X2. However, BimmerToday reports that the new 2 Series coupé will instead employ a version of BMW’s CLAR platform, which it will share with the next-gen 3 Series and upcoming Z4 roadster.
Of course, should this report turn out to be accurate, it’ll be good news for the future of the M2 (revealed in April 2018 in Competition guise), which would thus likewise remain rear-driven (its key rivals, the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3, are both all-wheel-drive). According to the report, though, the topless version of the 2 Series will “receive no successor”.
Interestingly, BimmerToday claims that a new 2 Series Gran Coupé (to rival the upcoming new Mercedes-Benz CLA) as well as the next-generation versions of the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer will run on the front-wheel-drive platform.
Expect the new BMW 2 Series coupé to launch post-2020.
