What happens one year after BMW unveil a new car? Correct, they lift the wraps off the M version. In the 2-Series’ case it’s been nearly a year since it was launched meaning the odds are that we’ll be seeing a BMW M2 at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show in mid January.
The new coupe is set to be a 260 kW beast that should satisfy those hardcore Beemer fans who thought the M3/M4 was getting soft and becoming too much of a useable everyday car.
From the spy pics you can see its bonnet bulge and flared wheel arches clearly carry on from where the 1 Series M Coupe left off and under the bonnet will be a hotter version of the M235i’s 240 kW 3,0-litre single-turbo straight-six.
Power is still a way off the M3/M4’s 317 kW but it’s likely the M2 (if they call it that and not a 2 Series M Coupe) will have a manual gearbox, a proper mechanical limited-slip differential, and stiffer fixed-rate dampers to transform the M2 into a purer, faster driving machine. Expect a lighter, tauter car that could also have carbon fibre-reinforced plastic panels to strip out yet more weight.
