Purists recoiled in horror when BMW plastered the hallowed M badge to the respective rumps of the X5 and X6 back in 2009. Now, some seven years later, an executive at the Munich-based brand has confirmed that more M-badged SUVs are on the way.
Peter Quintus, vice-president of sales and marketing at BMW M, told motoring.com.au that building more M-badged SUVs makes “perfect sense”.
“And we will be looking into that as part of our strategy moving forward in order to identify what opportunities actually exist to exploit that growing demand,” Quintus told the Australian publication.
“Quite clearly there is potential in the SUV segment, and you will see in the near future some more M models.”
Of course, rumours of an X3 M have been doing the rounds of late, with a possible prototype even being caught testing at the Nürburgring. With the third-generation X3 set to go on sale around a year from now, we’d speculate that the M version would arrive towards the end of 2018, with an X4 M to follow that.
Next in line would likely be the X1 and upcoming X2…
