Bosch is developing an updated anti-lock braking system (ABS) that is 20 per cent smaller, as well as being lighter, quieter and more efficient than previous versions.
The new system, named Bosch ABS 8.1, is claimed to further reduce braking distances, particularly on slippery surfaces, and produces fewer brake pedal vibrations, reports.
“This new version meets the objectives of (vehicle makers) for a greater reduction in weight and installation space,” said a Bosch spokesman, who added that the main improvement was a more efficient control loop for the return pump. That, in turn, allowed the use of a smaller electric motor, the manufacturer claimed.
The ABS unit’s pump and valve triggering have also reportedly been improved. The most compact version of 8.1, which combines an hydraulic unit and electronic control unit, now measures less than one cubic decimetre in volume and weighs 1,4 kg.
Variable speed control provides a claimed reduction in pedal vibrations and noise – notably high-frequency noise. The new pump also consumes less power than previous versions.
