We already know that the next generation Ferrari 458 is likely to use a turbocharged V8 engine. Sources now suggest that Ferrari, as is the case with future Audis, will use an electrically-driven turbocharger(s).
The advantages of such a system is that turbo lag is basically eliminated. Currently turbocharged engines are already highly sophisticated, with only tiny amounts of turbo lag lower in the rev range. But, when an electric motor is fitted, the turbocharger can be programmed to supply boost from as low in the rev range as possible, with the electric motor’s effect relinquishing the moment enough air flows through the ‘charger.
Ferrari has launched its first turbocharged engine since the Ferrari F40 supercar in the new California T. Fortunately, for those in favour of naturally-aspirated engines, the company recently confirmed that it will continue to manufacture naturally-aspirated V12 engines.
Once the new turbocharged Ferrari 458 is launched, the battle between it and McLaren’s 650S will be closer than ever before.
