A new report out of the United Kingdom suggests that the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS won’t be offered with an AMG-fettled V8. Yes, prepare to say farewell to the CLS63 derivative.
Why? Well, according to Autocar, the Stuttgart-based brand is keen to leave some breathing space for another of its so-called “four-door coupés”, which was previewed by the GT Concept in Geneva.
The latter is expected to make use of Affalterbach’s 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which would likely leave the range-topping CLS with the German automaker’s new turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine (which, rumour has it, will also power an upcoming E50 Coupé), punting out about 335 kW. Cheaper CLS models are expected to use a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder mills.
Although not yet official, the new CLS – which is again likely to run on E-Class underpinnings – is reportedly on track to arrive in 2018.
