Ferrari has seen a great amount of motorsport success since its creation way back in the late 1930s. And now the Italian manufacturer is celebrating its on-track achievements with a collection of special liveries unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. These vehicles are set to take part in a 60-country world tour over the next year.
The liveries pay tribute to various iconic cars from the past 70-odd years, and are applied to current production model Ferraris.
The Sterling – Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
In 1961, Sterling Moss piloted a 250 GT Berlinetta SWB painted in a Blu Scuro racing livery to a win in the 421 km-long 1961 Tourist Trophy held at Goodwood, while racing against the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill. He completed it in 3h 01min 12sec, with a total of 109 laps under his belt.
The Schumacher – Ferrari 488 GTB
Michael Schumacher has a number of wins to his name, but most notable to Ferrari was the 2003 F1 championship in which he used the F2003-GA (with the helps of Ross Brawn) to dominate the field and break Juan Manuel Fangio’s record of five championships (this, of course, would be his sixth).
The McQueen – Ferrari California T
Steve McQueen was an amateur racing driver, but his contribution to the big screen was what made his famous. Papillon, The Great Escape, Le Mans, and Bullit are a few movies in which he starred. This particular livery, however, pays tribute to his personal 1963 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, which he received as a gift from his wife.
The Green Jewel – Ferrari 488 Spider
In 1965 and 1966, British-born David Piper drove the Ferrari 365 P2 to victory at the Nine Hours of Kyalami, while fending off the likes of the Ford GT40 and Porsche 904 GTS.
Tailor Made – Ferrari 488 Spider
This one pays tribute to the 1953 375 MM designed by Pininfarina which won the 1954 Buenos Aires 1000 km, driven by Giuseppe Farina and Umberto Maglioli. In 2013, this car was sold for $9 075 000 (about R123 860 000).
