Following the recent introduction of the California T model and news that the 458 Italia will adopt a turbocharged powerplant next year, aficionados might be relieved to hear that for the time being, Ferrari has no plans to introduce forced-induction technology to its V12 powerplants.
In CAR magazine’s August 2014 issue, associate editor Ian McLaren provides a local driving impression of the awe-inspiring F12berlinetta, the most powerful and fastest Ferrari that money can buy – assuming you weren’t one of the 499 who procured a LaFerrari.
One of the F12’s most definitive traits is its soulful, howling V12 exhaust note. Given the criticism that’s been levelled at the muting effect the return of turbocharging technology has had on Formula One racing in 2014, and the fact that some forced-induction performance cars utilise “sound symposers” or electronically-controlled addenda to append the timbres of their engines, some may fear that Ferrari’s sonorous 6,2-litre V12 could be muffled by the addition of a turbo.
Fortunately for them, Car Magazine UK reports that for the “mid-term at least, the V12s will remain members of the free-breathing fraternity”. The FF will undergo its mid-cycle facelift in 2016, when the output of the 48-valve motor will be increased to approximately 520 kW. The F12 will receive a
facelift as well as an increased power and torque outputs, the publication said.
Even if turbocharging does not feature on all Ferraris in the future, hybrid technology will, however, form part of the all-new Ferrari architectures which are due to come on stream from 2017 (front-engined cars) and 2019 (mid-engined cars), respectively.
