Yesterday, we reported that the new seven-seater Volkswagen crossover scheduled to launch in 2017 will bear a name chosen by the German brand’s North American division.
But now a fresh report, citing a trademark application, has revealed what could just end up being the new SUV’s moniker.
Back in December 2015, the German automaker filed an application to trademark the name “Teramont”. Interestingly, further digging reveals that VW in fact registered this name internationally just last month.
And that last piece of information leads us to believe that the Teramont badge could be used on the new Tennessee-built crossover in global markets, with the US market likely employing a different moniker.
In fact, Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen North America, earlier told Automotive News that the new crossover – which will draw inspiration from the CrossBlue concept – will have a “bullish, much easier-to-pronounce, American-style name”.
Woebcken also hinted that the US-specific name would probably not start with a “T”, like its Tiguan and Touareg crossover siblings.
