As you may already know, the BMW 3 Series sedan will soon no longer be produced here in South Africa, as the brand’s Rosslyn plant is set to begin building the new X3 instead.
So, where will the German automaker produce the popular compact executive sedan in future? Well, from 2019, the plan is for Mexico to bolt together up to 150 000 units annually.
BMW says a new plant in Mexico will feature all of the up-to-date technology found at every other one of its numerous global production facilities, with some $1-billion being piled into the project.
The factory, which is based in San Luis Potosí, will include a body shop, a paint shop and an assembly line, with at least 1 500 new jobs expected to be generated.
Of course, it’s rather an important project for the automaker, seeing as the 3 Series is still its best-selling model series.
