Euro NCAP has released the results of its latest batch of crash-tests, with the Audi Q2, Hyundai Ioniq and Ford Edge all scoring maximum five-star ratings.
The SsangYong Tivoli, meanwhile, received a base rating of three stars, or four when tested with an optional safety pack. The tiny Suzuki Ignis – which is under consideration for local introduction in 2017 – scored three stars in standard form, but managed a maximum score of five stars when tested with a safety pack.
The electric-drive Ioniq (the hybrid version was tested), Edge (which sits above the Kuga in some markets) and Tivoli are not available in South Africa. But the new Q2 is scheduled to hit local dealers in the first quarter of 2017, so we’ll look at this model’s performance in a little more detail below.
The five-door crossover – which will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA and new Mini Countryman – scored 93% for adult occupancy, 86% for child occupancy, 70% for pedestrian and 70% for safety assistance.
The video below shows that the Q2’s passenger compartment remained stable in the offset deformable barrier test. Euro NCAP says that dummy readings indicated “good protection of the knees and femurs” of both the driver and passenger dummies.
In both the side-barrier test and the more severe side-pole impact, maximum points were scored, with “good” protection of all critical parts of the body.
In terms of child occupancy protection, the Q2 provided “good or adequate” protection of the six- and 10-year old dummies (for all critical body areas) in the frontal offset test. In the side-impact test, protection was rated “good” and maximum points were scored.
