All the new vehicle sales figures from around the globe covering the first six months of 2016 have now finally finished trickling in, which means we’re able to determine the world’s best-selling car in the first half of the year.
And that car is … the Toyota Corolla. Yes, the Japanese vehicle retained its place at the very top of the pile, according to the folks over at Focus2Move, although sales fell some 1,2% year-on-year to 634 298 units (out of a total global market of 45,8 million vehicles).
The Volkswagen Golf clung on to second place despite the diesel emissions scandal still engulfing the German automaker, while the Ford F-Series moved up to third in the world thanks to an impressive sales growth figure of 12,6%. Sales of the Ford Focus, meanwhile, plummeted 16,4%, which saw it drop to fourth overall.
The Hyundai Elantra held onto fifth place, while the Volkswagen Polo climbed one spot to sixth. The Toyota RAV4 claimed the title of the world’s best-selling SUV, moving up to seventh overall thanks to a 10,8% increase in sales.
The Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Silverado closed out the top ten. One of the biggest movers, however, was the Hyundai Tucson, which rocketed up from last year’s 965th place to 16th overall in the first half of 2016, with a 202,4% increase in sales.
