After revealing the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé at the Geneva International Motor Show, the head of the Affalterbach-based performance arm confirmed that his team was working on a hardcore “Black Series” version of the GT coupé.
Tobias Moers, the boss of Mercedes-AMG, hinted that the firm would launch its GT Black Series in 2020. Just five models in AMG’s history have been given the Black Series treatment: the SLK55, CLK63, SL65, C63 Coupé and the SLS.
“There is a GT variant still left. We are on the journey, we started the journey for Black Series,” Moers said, according to CarAdvice.
The Black Series will be positioned above the Mercedes-AMG GT R (pictured above), which makes 430 kW and 700 N.m from its twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 heart. Moers told the Australian publication that there was “still room for more” from the eight-cylinder petrol engine.
In the most extreme, GT63 S version of the recently revealed (and clumsily named) GT 4-Door Coupé, this M178 mill churns out a whopping 470 kW and 900 N.m. But bear in mind that this model uses the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system (allowing it to handle a bit more oomph), whereas the Black Series will almost certainly be rear-wheel drive.
“The next Black Series done out of the GT must be something really surprising. And this is what we’re working on,” Moers added, according to motoring.com.au.
