More details on Mercedes-Benz bakkie: drivetrain and spec

By: Steve Smith

Chatting to Car magazine in the UK, chief of Daimler’s commercial vehicle division, Volker Mornhinweg has revealed more details of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz pick-up. Beyond saying “before the end of the decade”, Merc have yet to confirm its launch date.

This, however, is the latest news on their plans…

To be badged GLT
In-house it’s been given the the odd codename “Project Andrew”, but it’s expected to be called the GLT.

It will be a collab with Nissan
Remember that the two companies (through Renault-Nissan) already collaborate on the Smart Fortwo/Forfour and Infiniti Q30. As we have reported, it will use the new Nissan Navara D40-generation platform built in Thailand and Mexico.

There will be one body style
A double-cab will be your only option, but there will be three equipment levels. They have been provisionally labelled “workhorse”, “dual use” and “leisure and family”.

There will be a choice of engines and transmissions
The choices will be petrol and diesel four- and six-cylinder engines, as well as a choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.

Suspensions options too
A live rear axle will be standard, but you can specify an independent suspension. Mercedes-Benz’s proprietary 4Matic AWD system will also be an option.

Benchmark interior
The GLT will offer not only the most luxurious interior in the segment, but the best rear passenger space. The exact spec of the interior will depend on which of the three different equipment levels you choose, but it will have a  GLE and GLC-inspired instrument panel, and a tailgate which can be locked at a 90deg or 180deg angle. An electric rear window will also be an option.
