The Mercedes A45 AMG (track test here) is in no way any slouch, but already Mercedes-AMG is planning a more hardcore version of its hot hatch.
Following Volkswagen’s Golf R400 concept and reports that the concept will make it to production, Mercedes-AMG is clearly concerned that its fellow German will take its title as the producer of the world’s most powerful stock 2,0-litre engine.
However, the new version will not carry the Black Series name, because, according to AMG boss Tobias Moers, “A Black Series model is a race car, street legal with two doors. Maybe we don’t use the label Black Series for that car, we are playing around with some ideas.”
Together with a stripped down interior, the use of lighter materials, and the extra power that can be extracted from the engine, the A45 AMG should pack a punch that the Golf R400 did not see coming.
Moers also pointed out that a lack of manpower could halt such plans. “To meet our requirements with a car like the A45 Black Series you need capacity in engineering and our guys are at the limit right now. Getting the GT S and the C63 AMG to the market, and there’s facelifts and replacement models to work on, it’s a lot of work.”
