Volkswagen has announced that both the Mk1 Golf GTi and the Mk7 Golf GTI Clubsport S will tackle the hillclimb at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Hans-Joachim Stuck is the man tasked with blasting the pair up the famous hill, giving him the unique opportunity to directly compare the original to the new two-seater model that only just claimed the lap record for front-wheel drive production cars at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Effectively the bookends of the 40-year GTI story, the two vehicles are naturally rather different; the one being both practical and sporty (for its time, anyway) and the other essentially a stripped-down, track-focussed hyper hatch.
Other Volkswagen models set to be displayed at the event include the Mk3 Golf GTI, the Golf GTE Sport concept (a hint at the future of the Golf GTI), the Polo R WRC car, and the new Tiguan.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place on the south coast of England from 23 to 26 June.
