Popular Production Car competitor Fanie de Bruin was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. The diagnosis has come as a shock to both Fanie and the Production Car community. -

- At the tender age of 26, de Bruin already has a formidable track record in national competition. After completing the Aintree International Super Saloon and Single Seater course in 1994, de Bruin was hooked on racing and spent a few years competing at regional and national level in Formula K. The Centurion resident made the switch to Production Cars in 1998, competing in class F of the series driving a semi-factory-backed Toyota Tazz. Success came early and in February 1999 Fanie’s talent was recognised when he earned the prestigious CAR Magazine Rookie of Day award; he went on to finish second overall in his class that year. -

- De Bruin contested class D of the championship in 2000, but his reputation as a quick and clean driver earned him a works class D ride with the Ford factory team the following year. After a late start to the 2001 season, most of which was spent developing the now very quick Ford Fiestas, Fanie was lying third in the 2002 championship, only one point behind second position, when he received the news of his medical condition. Amongst fellow class D drivers in the highly competitive formula Fanie is described as a committed and very quick competitor, but also one who is very approachable and quick to congratulate others. Always a front-runner, Fanie has won many races and has been a factor in every championship since he started racing Production Cars. -

- The Production Car Association is deeply concerned for de Bruin’s welfare, especially since treatment of his condition is bound to be long and costly. As a result a Benefit Fund has been started by the Association to enable those so wishing to make donations to help Fanie and his wife through what is sure to be a very trying and difficult time. Fanie has already started treatment, and the thoughts and prayers of the Production Car Association and its members are with him and his family. -
