Mazda’s lauded MX-5 is in for some serious change – the world’s best selling roadster will be unveiled at the upcoming British Motor Show, sporting a new retractable hard top!
The Mazda MX-5′s lightweight construction and chuckable nature have over the years allowed it to build up an impressive global fan base. But even a “classic” needs to keep abreast of current trends, and the venerable MX-5 is no different.
Initially the preserve of top-end boutique models, the retractable hard top has filtered down into all sorts of new two- and four-seater models, and the MX-5 is the latest to adopt the electrically operated folding hard top.
We quite liked the easy operation of the cloth roof when we drove the latest MX-5 earlier this year, but Mazda clearly wanted to go one better.
Many would argue the obvious safety benefits of the metal roof over the traditional cloth covering, and the easy operation of electric roof systems has generally managed to convince most “regular” drivers. But will the addition of the (heavier) retractable roof unnerve the purist MX-5 lover?
Only time, and the car’s global début at the British Motor Show on July 18, will tell.
