A new generation BMW 5-Series will be revealed in the not too distant future, and together with the new Series will come a BMW M5. Though it may not be actual pictures of what the new M5 will look like, we can report on some of the new technicalities.
The engine fitted to the new BMW M5 will, in all likelihood, be an updated version of the twin-turbocharged 4,4-litre V8 doing duty in the current M5. In its current state of tune it develops 425 kW and 680 N.m of torque, but that number is sure to increase.
The power will not increase significantly, as engineers are concerned with lowering the overall weight of the new car. It is believed the new generation will be as much as 100 kg lighter than the current model. To achieve the weight loss from the current 5-Series’ 1,8 tonne frame, the new car will be built with high-strength steels and carbon fibre-reinforced plastics.
BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive systems is likely to be an option on the new M5 and power will be channelled via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There is currently no news whether a manual gearbox will be on offer, and if one is, whether it will reach our market.
A wide and low front bumper aided by bigger fenders occupy the front of the car and at the rear a diffuser has been integrated into the bumper.
The new 5-Series should see the light sometime in 2016, but the M5 will only arrive about a year after the original launch. Probably as a 2018 model.
