New engines for Alfa Romeo?

Alfisti fans will be happy to hear that their favourite automaker, Alfa Romeo, is planning a series of new four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

The engines will debut in the highly anticpated 159 midsize sedan replacement (codenamed Project 952) due in mid 2015. According to Automotive News, Alfa are working on 2,0-litre four-cylinder and 2,9-litre V6 petrol engines. This V6 is said to be based on Maserati’s 3,0-litre V6 and could also be built by Ferrari.

The volume seller –  the 2.0-litre (called the Global Medium Engine) –  will produce between 135 kw and 246 kW thanks to turbocharging and direct-injection technologies.

Two diesels – a 2,2-litre four-cylinder and 3,0-litre V6 – will also both be turbocharged. The V6 will be a development of the 3.0-litre V6 diesel currently doing duty in Jeep and Maseratis, and will develop between 205 and 254 kW. The four-cylinder will develop between 100 and 156 kW.

Topping the range will be a turbopetrol V6 petrol reserved for the GTA-badged performance variant.

The new sedan will be the start of a new model assault that will include two compact cars, another variant of the small sedan (possibly a wagon), a range-topping mid-size sedan, two crossovers (small and mid-size) and a new sports car to replace the 4C… all of which will be launched before 2018.
