If you are an Alfa Romeo fan you have, no doubt, been rejoicing since the Italian firm announced the return of the (rear-wheel drive) Giulia. As an Alfisti you should also get a hold of the August issue of CAR magazine and read Mike Fourie’s column. CAR’s deputy editor delves into what the new Giulia really represents for the brand and its revival.
As if to underline Fourie’s commentary Fiat, and therefore Alfa, boss Sergio Marchionne has announced that there will be an Alfa Romeo SUV going to market as early as next year. And that isn’t just hot air either as plans are already quite far down the road.
Marchionne was quoted by The Detroit Free Press as saying that the company has already spent nearly €2 billion, a sum which includes “the industrialization on the first car, the architecture, the engines and effectively all the prep work in connection with the launch of the second vehicle, which is coming at the end of the first half, beginning of the second half of 2016.”
There is very other info available on the new model, so we are not sure which SUVs the new Alfa will rival. What we do know, however, is that Alfa are keen to get a slice of the lucrative US car market and an SUV is a clear indication of that fact.
