When the first generation Audi R8 was launched, the company used the 4,2-litre, V8 engine from its RS4 sports sedan. Shortly thereafter, the R8 gained a V10 engine. Since then the focus has been on the V10 models (read our driving impression here), although Audi continued to offer the V8 range.
However, now USA-based motoring title Car & Driver reports that Audi is currently developing a new entry-level model for the range. It is set to use a 3,0-litre, V6 biturbo engine based on the unit used in the Audi S4. The engine will apparently be tuned to develop around 335 kW, which is more than the 316 kW the V8 delivers. Also, this turbocharged engine will develop significantly more torque than the 430 N.m. from the naturally-aspirated unit. Even in standard trim, the S4’s engine develops 440 N.m, expect this figure to rise closer to 500 N.m.
As expected, it will feature the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. As nothing is confirmed, we can only assume that top speed would be in the region of 300 km/h, while the sprint to 100 km/h could dip below 4,0 seconds.
Should this engine be fitted, it will replace the current V8 model, which is priced at R1 680 000. This will mean the new base model will be even stronger competition for the Porsche 911 and and Jaguar F-Type, to name two.
