In an expansion of its eDrive product portfolio, BMW has implemented its plug-in hybrid system in the 2 Series Active Tourer line-up. The hybrid system utilises a 1,5-litre three-cylinder engine and electric motor combination that is similar to that of the i8, which means this model will also be all-wheel-driven, but its layout will be altered.
The 225xe’s front wheels is powered by the 100 kW/220 N.m petrol engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the rear wheels will be propelled by the 65 kW/250 N.m electric motor. Each of the motors can be deactivated by the various driving modes available. Therefore the drivetrain can vary between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
In addition, a 15 kW generator has been installed. This serves the purpose of recharging the battery through the petrol engine. The generator will also work as a stop-start support system when a little extra power is required.
BMW claims the 225xe will set a zero-to-100 km/h time of just 6,7 seconds. The car’s combined outputs are 180 kW with 570 N.m of torque available without the help of the added generator.
It is further claimed the newcomer will consume an average of 2,0 l/100km. The 225xe is 160 kg heavier than the 225i, but if the BMW i8 is anything to go by, that fuel efficiency figure may be quite difficult to achieve in everyday use.
The 225xe will shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Show and is expected to go on sale by the end of the year in Europe.
