It was supposed to be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show later today, but someone couldn’t wait any longer, so here are press images of the Fiat 124 Spider.
We’ve already brought you news of the collaboration between Mazda and Fiat that made this car possible. But the quick recap is that it is based on the existing MX-5, a car that we rate highly (of which you can read a full road test in the December issue of CAR).
The new model draws heavily on the styling of its 1960s predecessor, but the proportions are constrained by the Mazda’s small platform. The looks between the two cars may be marked different by inside they are virtually identical.
Most notable of the changes between the two models is the powertrain. Fiat will be using a turbocharged 1,4-litre motor that develops 120 kW and 241 N.m of torque. Drive will delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or auto transmission.
We look forward to getting our hands on the little roadster, if/when it makes its way to South Africa.
